Last week I was staring at a June statement at the kitchen table when my husband said, “We don’t even own a car. We own 14 free nights of thinking about a car.” I laughed, then looked at our travel budget.

It turns out the small stuff adds up, and the right credit card can turn that small stuff into hotel nights. Hilton and American Express just raised their welcome offers on their co-branded cards, and the biggest one earns up to 200,000 bonus points. Three of the four cards also throw in a free night award that can be redeemed at properties costing up to 250,000 points per night.
Full disclosure: if you apply through links on this site, we may earn a commission. The details below are the publicly available offers as of October 29, 2026, and terms apply.
The four cards, from cheapest to fanciest
Let me walk through them in order. I’ll keep it to the welcome offer and the perks that matter for a family like ours. Applications through January 13, 2027 qualify for these limited-time bonuses.
1. Hilton Honors American Express Card: 70,000 points + free night
No annual fee. Earn 70,000 Hilton Honors bonus points plus a free night award after spending $2,000 in your first six months. Ongoing perks include 7x points on eligible Hilton spending, Hilton Honors Silver status as long as you hold the card, and Gold status if you hit $20,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year. If you want zero annual fee and you already stay at Hiltons, this is the obvious starting point.
2. Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card: 130,000 points + free night
Annual fee: see current terms. Earn 130,000 bonus points plus a free night after spending $3,000 in your first six months. The ongoing perks are where this card starts to make sense for frequent travelers: 12x points at Hilton, Gold status as long as you hold it, Diamond status at $40,000 in annual eligible spending, up to $200 in Hilton statement credits per year ($50 per quarter), an annual free night after $15,000 in spending, and National Emerald Club Executive status with Amex enrollment.
3. Hilton Honors American Express Business Card: 150,000 points + free night
Annual fee: see current terms. Earn 150,000 bonus points plus a free night after $8,000 in spending in your first six months. Perks include 12x points on eligible Hilton purchases, 5x points on the first $100,000 of other spending each calendar year (3x after that), Gold status as long as you hold it, Diamond status at $40,000 in annual eligible spending, and up to $240 back per year in Hilton statement credits ($60 per quarter). This one is for small businesses, but if you run a side hustle and already book through Hilton, it’s worth a look.
4. Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: 200,000 points
Annual fee: see current terms. The welcome offer is 200,000 bonus points after $6,000 in spending in your first six months. The card also includes an annual free night reward every year you hold it (including the year you open it), so treat the welcome offer as 200,000 points plus a free night. Ongoing: 14x points at Hilton, Diamond status as long as you hold it, up to $400 in resort credits annually ($200 semi-annually), a $200 flight credit, up to a $219 CLEAR+ credit, and extra free nights at $30,000 and $60,000 annual spending.

Is the free night award actually valuable?
Yes, and here’s why. A Hilton free night award can be redeemed at the vast majority of Hilton properties for a standard room, and it works up to properties that normally cost 250,000 points per night. It’s valid for 12 months from the date it’s issued. For a family that does one or two Hilton trips a year, that single night can be the difference between a splurge and a regular weekend.

Which one should you actually pick?
I’ll be honest: there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But here’s how I’d think about it.
If you’ve never had a Hilton Amex card, start with the no-annual-fee card. The $2,000 spend requirement is low, and the 70,000 points plus a free night is a solid intro to the program. If you travel to Hiltons at least once or twice a year, the Surpass Card is worth the annual fee for the better bonus and the ongoing perks. If you stay at Hilton resorts at least once every six months, the Aspire Card makes sense, and the annual free night is a real perk, not just a welcome offer.

For businesses, the Business Card is the one to consider, and it doesn’t count toward Chase’s 5/24 rule, which is a nice side benefit for anyone juggling multiple card applications.
Quick answers to the questions I get
Can I apply for more than one? Each card’s welcome offer is considered independently, so you can hold multiple Hilton Amex cards over time, as long as you haven’t held that specific card before.
How do I know I’m eligible for the welcome offer? Hilton Amex cards generally follow a “once in a lifetime” rule. Amex shows a pop-up warning during the application if you’re not eligible for that card’s welcome offer.
Do I need a specific credit score? Amex doesn’t publish a minimum score. Your credit history, income, existing Amex relationship, and recent applications all factor in. Excellent credit helps, but there’s no published number.
Can I apply if I already have an Amex card? Yes, as long as you haven’t held that specific Hilton card before. Amex generally caps you at five credit cards at a time, excluding charge cards.

What to do today
Pull up your last two travel statements and count your Hilton nights. If you’re staying at Hiltons even a few times a year, one of these cards will pay for itself in points alone. Start with the no-annual-fee card, spend $2,000, and you’ll have 70,000 points and a free night before your next anniversary trip.
Travel rewards are the small stuff that adds up. The free night isn’t the whole strategy, but it’s the easiest part to start with. Slowly, you build the habit of paying for travel with points instead of cash, and the kitchen-table math gets a lot more fun.
